Harry R. Eberlin photographs
Scope and Content Note
The Harry R. Eberlin Photographs include approximately 100 images of lesbian and gay public events in Philadelphia circa 1972 - circa 1980. Exact dates are difficult to determine, since the photographer did not keep written records of his subjects. These images focus largely on events sponsored by the Gay Community Center of Philadelphia and on public pickets, parades and parties. Some photographs of the Gay Switchboard of Philadelphia are included. Most of the images are contact-print sheets made from 35mm black and white negatives, although there are some enlargements.
Identifiable subjects include Tommi Avicolli, Rita Mae Brown, Franklin Kameny, Kiyoshi Kuromiya, Walter Lear, Marcie Maldauer, Tom Malun, John "Sagittarius" Powell and Steve Wigod.

Biographical/Historical Note
Harry R. Eberlin was a prolific photographer, averaging more than 1,000 pictures per year from 1960 into the early 1980s. He began documenting Philadelphia's lesbian and gay community in the early 1970s. Eberlin contributed photographs to several Philadelphia gay publications, including The Gay Alternative and the Philadelphia Gay News. In the mid 1970s, he was active in such organizations as the Gay Media Project.
